Over the last two years Doug has been researching and writing a book on ‘The New Way to Garden’ and in this talk he will consider how we can apply the latest scientific research and best practice from leading gardens around the world, to help us create gardens that do good and benefit our soils, our plants, our wellbeing and the environment.
Doug will have copies of his book for sale.
Thursday 26 September at 7.30pm – Rose Horspool
Gertrude Jekyll: a biography of this infamous plantswoman
Rose Horspool taught and worked in design for many years in the UK and France and then worked at Bishop Burton College, latterly as Head of Creative Studies, including interior and garden design. Rose will talk about Gertrude Jekyll, who, with her formidable self-discipline, a powerful mind and the liberty to pursue her great passions, helped to change the way we garden.
Jekyll designed over 400 gardens, including her home at Munstead Wood (now a National Trust property), taking influence from her Arts & Crafts contemporaries, William Morris and John Ruskin, and designing exuberant gardens with deft use of colour, often incorporating garden ‘rooms’, and using a more naturalistic style of planting than had hitherto been seen in England.

Creating a haven for wildlife on the outskirts of York
The Forest of Flowers project in Huby, York has created 74 acres of new woodland and wildflower meadows, with the sole aim of providing a thriving natural sanctuary for wildlife.
The land, which was previously a mixed arable and sheep farm, was re-purposed in 2015, since when, with the support of the Woodland Trust and other partners, over 42,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, alongside 35 native wildflower species. This is part of a vision to create a thriving ecosystem to benefit pollinators, birds and a diverse range of native wildlife.
Wildflower seeds, honey and plants will be for sale.
Thursday 14 November at 7.30pm – Dr Toni Bunnell
The Disappearing Hedgehog
Wildlife biologist Dr Toni Bunnell has run York Hedgehog Rescue for 26 years and has published many articles and done much research on the European hedgehog. She will explain how we can help to rescue this beloved and iconic creature, which is in serious decline and rapidly disappearing from the UK.
Her books will be available to purchase on the night.
Also
Stan Cockerham will be taking orders for his hedgehog houses with all proceeds going to the York Hedgehog Rescue charity.
Thursday 12 December at 7.30pm – Val Bradley
Making the most of your Houseplants: Choice, Care & Positioning
Val Bradley is a freelance garden writer, author and RHS Trial judge, who has been gardening since she could hold atrowel. But her career in horticulture only began after working for three years in a civil service office. The discovery that it was possible to follow a career in gardening was a revelation.
She has worked in many areas of horticulture, including RHS Wisley andas a journalist and specializes in, and has written, ‘The Complete Guide to Houseplants”.
This talk will also be the Club’s Christmas event and wine, soft drinks and mince pies will be served!
