His talk is about his experiences in gardening and can relate them to amateur gardeners and professionals alike. Andy says “It is a light-hearted look at gardening and is meant to be amusing while also informative. It starts with getting into gardening and taking the first few steps, buying plants, planting, veg gardening, lawn maintenance and hedge cutting, organic approach etc. The talk will put across what it’s like to work in private service on an estate as well.”

November 2022
This month’s talk is entitled: Thomas Backhouse – brother of the more famous James – & The Early History of the Backhouse Nursery of York and will be presented by Professor Gillian Parker at the Askham Bryan College Conference centre on Thursday 10 November at 7.30pm
The Giant Redwood – magnificent trees which mark the historical entrance to the Backhouse estate in York.
In 1815, James Backhouse and his brother Thomas bought a long-established nursery in York to start their own business. Despite his key role in the business, Thomas is rarely given credit for the work that allowed James’ son (also James) to assume responsibility for the nursery and to turn it into a famous centre of rock garden and alpine plant expertise. This talk redresses the balance by outlining the history of the two York nurseries which the Backhouses bought to form their own business, the development of their own nursery up to 1854 and some of the plants that they were growing, developing and showing in the early- to mid-19th century.
