Here we are about to crash land into Christmas and then in the blink of an eye we shall be into 2023. Another year over and done with and a new one to embrace.
“Time” is a popular subject for singer/songwriters. Three of my favourites are the Bob Dylan classic “The times they are a changing,” the gently reflective “The Circle Game” by Joni Mitchell and the hauntingly beautiful “Who Knows Where The Time Goes” from Sandy Denny.
I find “time” quite a difficult concept to get my head around. Who decided that the time it takes the earth to do a 360 degree turn on its axis should be divided into 24 “hours”? I know that an hour is divided into 60 minutes and a minute is sub-divided into 60 seconds but I still have difficulty grasping exactly what they ARE. And another question – how did this concept become universally accepted? The next time I bump into Professor Brian Cox in the pub, I must have a deep meaningful conversation with him about this.
There are a couple of things I do know about time. One is that I never seem to have enough of it. I am always dashing hither and yon like the proverbial headless chicken, trying to get all the things I need to get done done – and usually failing. The other thing I accept is that we cannot influence time we are simply witnesses to its passing.
