They come, they go, a few stay.
A couple of weeks ago I was reading an article in The Yorkshire Post about a new variety of potato named ‘Nemo.’ It is being grown by one potato supplier based in Lincolnshire and it is claimed to be a game-changer, as the golden yellow fleshed variety can cut cooking time by 25%. If you would like to try them, they are exclusively being sold in selected branches of Tesco.
This news set a hare running in by brain about the transient nature of some things while others stand the test of time. Take our ‘Nemo’ potato – is it really something which will still be gracing our dinner plates in a 100 years’ time? Or is it a flash in the pan that will be forgotten about in a few years’ time?
The King Edward potato was introduced in 1902 and it is still a popular main crop choice for many gardeners. Why? Because it has all the attributes of a great potato – crops well, stores for a long time, cooks well and has a great texture and taste.
Who remembers the Filofax?
This personal organiser was much beloved by Del Boy Trotter in Only Fools and Horses and was the ultimate status symbol of any self-respecting yuppie of the Thatcher era. I believe they are still available but, for the majority of the populous, they have been superseded by the modern smart phone.
Hands up now! Back in the 1960s and 70s, who owned a Goblin Teasmade?
The idea had merit but apparently they were not very practical with lots of gurgling water noises that woke you up before the alarm went off and the milk used to curdle in the bedroom overnight. This gadget was heavily advertised on TV in the run up to Christmas and was marketed as the peak of domestic sophistication.
To keep up with the Joneses these days, you have to own at least one air fryer.
One household appliance which has stood the test of time is the vacuum cleaner.
It was invented in 1901 and I imagine there cannot be many homes without one.
