Thorp Perrow Arboretum through the Seasons
Thorp Perrow is arguably one of the most important Arboretums in the North of England and is unique to Britain, if not Europe, in that it was the creation of one man, Colonel Sir Leonard Ropner (1895-1977). Situated in the Yorkshire Dales, not far from the historic town of Bedale, Thorp Perrow covers 100 acres and is currently home to 5 National Plant Collections and 51 Champion Trees. Faith Douglas is Curator of the Arboretum and will take us through the changing seasons of the garden and explain the plants of interest throughout the year.

This presentation is designed to brighten up a winter evening by transporting us on a journey around some beautiful gardens of Western Europe. Sarah has had the pleasure of escorting many tours during the past 25 years and in this talk she will enjoy sharing some of her adventures with you.

A Year in Sledmere Gardens 
Jan Lathan is the Head Gardener for Sledmere Gardens, and she will be talking about working in the Walled Garden and wider estate through the year, looking at monthly jobs and how the gardens change as the seasons progress. The garden was recently featured on Gardener’s World and each area has a different feel from the last to draw you through from the ANGEL GARDEN – inspired by the sad and beautiful song ‘Angel’ by Sarah McLachlan, to the LARK ASCENDING – inspired by the music of Vaughan Williams, to the REFLECTION GARDEN designed to invoke a soulful sense of loss, with a tight colour palette, dark water and muted paths creating a garden in deep contrast to the surroundings.

Mike I’Anson
Gardening Skills: Cuttings, Seeds & Pruning 
Mike I’Anson has been head gardener at a 5-acre private house where he led a team in a five-year restoration project, he subsequently moved on to be garden manager at Helmsley Walled Garden retiring in 2019.
This will be a practical and interactive talk in two parts. Firstly, Mike will take us through how he takes cuttings and sows seeds, including demonstrating how he uses his domestic propagating equipment. In the second half Mike will, through examples, takes us through the general principles of pruning trees and shrubs.

Jenny from Thistledown Flowers will talk about how she set up a seasonal, environmentally friendly, British cut flower business and demonstrate how you can use Spring flowers in a beautiful arrangement as well as tips on how to have gorgeous British blooms from your garden all year long!
