Redesign of the Garden at Mount Grace Priory by garden designer Chris Beardshaw

James is the Head Gardener at Mount Grace Priory House and Garden and has been with English Heritage for six years. He manages a small garden team and weekly volunteers across three Yorkshire sites – Mount Grace, Richmond and Barnard Castle. Professor Alastair Fitter
Friendly Fungi

Professor Alastair Fitter is a plant ecologist based at the University of York with wide-ranging research interests, including soil ecology and how plants behave in a changing world. In this talk he will explain how most plants have symbiotic fungi in their roots, known as mycorrrhizal fungi. Some of these fungi offer substantial benefits to the plants, but mycorrhizal symbioses are diverse ….. and not all their relationships are so friendly.

Thursday 7 December
Faith Douglas

Thorp Perrow Arboretum through the Seasons
Thorp Perrow is arguably one of the most important arboreta in the north of England and is unique to Britain, if not Europe, in that it was the creation of one man, Colonel Sir Leonard Ropner (1895-1977). Situated in the Yorkshire Dales, not far from the historic town of Bedale, Thorp Perrow covers 100 acres and is currently home to five National Plant Collections and 51 Champion Trees. Faith Douglas is Curator of the Arboretum and will take us through the changing seasons of the garden and explain the plants of interest throughout the year.
